AUSTRALIA collapsed in a world of hurt and their Gabba field of dreams is under threat from an Indian cricket uprising.

All-rounder Mitchell Marsh (hamstring) and rookie quick Josh Hazlewood (calf/cramps) broke down as dominant India reached 4-311 after the first day at the Gabba.

It was a brutal day in the field for the Aussies and everything that could go wrong did go wrong.

Marsh left the field and did not return after breaking down on a day where he took his first Test wicket.

Hazlewood (2-55) was battling cramps at several stages but walked off mid-over late in the day, battling what was said to be a calf injury.

Recalled fast bowler Mitchell Starc (0-56) was inocuous with spin king Shane Warne saying he calling for him to man up on a day of injury disaster for Australia.

While Australia went down in an injury heap on a hot Brisbane day, India thrived with Murali Vijay (144) cashing in.

There was major controversy at one stage with Hazlewood having Pujara caught behind but replays showed a rearing delivery brushed his helmet grille - leaving India to rue their call not to have the Decision Review System available for this series.
