4.41pm: DROPPED! Shaun Marsh is not having a happy return to the Australian team, at least in terms of his fielding. He has just dropped another catch, again off Vijay. Having put him down in the slips when the Indian opener was 36 he has grassed another, easier chance at mid-off, both times off the bowling of Mitchell Johnson. On 102, Vijay mis-hit an off-drive, the ball almost ballooning to Marsh who jumps too early and only gets one hand to the ball. It’s hard labour for the fast bowlers in these blast furnace conditions and they deserve better support. India should have been 4-182 but Vijay exploits his second life to move with two boundaries off Mitchell Starc to 115 and India to 3-195.
3.57pm: AN AUSTRALIAN fast-bowler has walked off injured and an Indian batsman has walked off fuming in a drama-filled afternoon session in the second Test at a sweltering Gabba.

3.24pm: WICKET AND ALMOST ANOTHER! India’s star batsman Virat Kohli is caught behind slashing at a wide-ish Hazlewood delivery and is caught behind by Haddin, who has figured in all three dismissals so far. Dumb play by Kohli because Australia is down two fast bowlers, with Mitch Marsh having treatment for a right hamstring injury and Starc suffering badly in the heat - although he’s just returned to the field looking much improved. Johnson’s not looking healthy either. But instead of exploiting the situation, the man who scored centuries in both innings in Adelaide last week, has chased a wide one from Australia’s one standing paceman and lost his wicket for 19. New batsman Ajinkya Rahane is very nearly inside edging the first ball he faces from Hazlewod, one that jagged off the seam. And then he actually has a life on nought when he dollies a rearing ball from Hazlewood high to the bowler’s left and he’s just not able to grasp it. India 3-137.

3.16pm: Mitchell Starc is in real distress as the Gabba cooks in 39 degree heat. He is sitting under a cold towel on the side of the field with Australian team doctor Peter Bruckner keeping a very close eye on him. Bruckner actually came out at the drinks break because of his concern for pace spearhead Mitchell Johnson who also is looking distressed but it quickly became apparent Starc was in even worse shape. It’s brutal out there.

2.21pm: WICKET BUT A HOWLER! Pujara is given out caught behind off Hazlewood for 17 but it’s another case of India being on the receiving end of a poor umpiring decision. The ball missed the batsman’s gloves as he swayed out of the way of a well-directed bouncer but catches the side of his helmet. Slips fieldsmen go up, but hardly convincingly. Still, it gives Hazlewood his first Test wicket and it’s well-deserved. He has been tidy in his debut Test without being terrifying. And now India’s form batsman Virat Kohli comes out to join Vijay, with whom he shared what looked like being a matchwinning partnership in Adelaide. India 2-101.
2.05pm: Worrying start to the lunch-tea session for Australia with Mitch Marsh grimacing after bowling the last ball of his opening over after the break and then being forced to go off for what looks to be a hamstring injury. That leaves Australia a fast bowler down although Shane Watson hasn’t been used at all yet. Then again, Watson only bowled seven overs in the Adelaide Test so maybe he’s not being viewed as a genuine all-rounder these days. Australia is lifting in the field, as it needs to do because Vijay is starting to develop a taste for Hazlewood’s bowling.

LUNCH: INDIA has comprehensively won the opening morning after electing to bat at the Gabba. At lunch on the opening day of the second Test in Brisbane, India was 1-89, with Murali Vijay on 46 (75 balls, six fours) and Cheteshwar Pujara on 15 (36 balls, one four)....

13.05pm: First session honours clearly to India, but luck too. Pujara french cuts Mitch Marsh for two and is extremely fortunate not to get an inside edge onto his stumps. But he survives and goes to lunch unbeaten on 15, with Vijay 46 and India 1-89. Not an especially impressive session for Australia. Certainly the attack is missing Ryan Harris’ probing accuracy. Josh Hazlewood probably the pick of the bowlers on debut although offspinner Nathan Lyon produced a couple of excellent deliveries in his four overs.
12.43pm: Well, that’s beaten everyone and everything. Lyon gets one to dip, spin and bounce. Pujara can’t get bat on it, almost loses his off-stump and keeper Brad Haddin can’t glove it as it scoots away for four. Lyon won’t be too disappointed. Plenty of encouragement for him early.
12.36pm: Small victory for India with spin introduced after just 17 overs on a pace-friendly wicket, with Adelaide Test hero Nathan Lyon coming on from the Stanley Street end. Lyon doubled his tally of wickets with a 12-wicket haul in Adelaide but the Gabba is his happiest hunting ground, with 15 wickets at 21.87 in three Tests here. A little but of turn for him in his opening over but it’s the bounce he’ll be most hoping to exploit.
12.27: DROPPED! Mitch Marsh might be on a high after taking his first wicket but brother Shaun is holding his head in despair after dropping Vijay on 36 off Mitch Johnson. He dives low to his left from third slip but gets his hands in a strange position and the ball bobbles out. India should have been 2-60. And now replays suggest Marsh might have taken the edge of Cheteshwar Pujara’s bat through to Haddin but it was so fine a nick that no-one appealed save for the man under the lid in close, Chris Rogers. Just not happening for Australia at the moment. And to illustrate the point Johnson fields in his follow through and rolls the ball out to the fieldsman at square leg — except there isn’t one and the Indians steal a single.
12.15pm: WICKET! Mitch Marsh grabs his first Test wicket as Shikhar Dhawan bottom edges an attempted square cut into the gloves of Brad Haddin. India 1-56. Marsh had to wait until his 346th ball in Test cricket to get that wicket and his teammates — older brother Shaun especially — join in the celebrations. Marsh’s Test figures 1-159.

12.10pm: FIFTY PARTNERSHIP. Shikhar Dhawan flicks Mitchell Johnson for four all run to bring up the 50 partnership with Vijay. That’s India’s first 50 partnership outside Asia in 44 innings so that’s one jinx broken. Johnson doesn’t appreciate it and slips the left-hander an excellent bouncer but both Indian openers are looking very secure. And then, for good measure, Johnson gives Vijay one as well.
12.07pm: INDIA has taken the sting out of the initial Australian assault and deflated the usual talk about Gabba greentops by safely negotiating the first hour of the second Test.

12.02pm: First hour of play gone and Steve Smith is still searching for his first wicket as Australian captain. The Australian pace bowlers have been a smidgen too short in the first hour. Case in point, Marsh drops one short and Vijay rocks onto the back foot and plays a deliberate uppercut over Nathan Lyon out to the point boundary to go to 39. India 0-49 after 12 overs.
11.52: Mitch Marsh comes on at the Stanley Street end bowling with the new ball. Well, it’s a new ball, with the Australians persuading the umpires that the ball they started the game with was out of shape. Guess it wasn’t swinging at all. Everyone willing Marsh to take his first Test wicket in his fourth Test. He’ll have figures of 1-150 if he takes one right now, but he’ll have dramatically improved on that average before his Test career is over.

11.48am: ALMOST! First edge of the morning flies just wide of Dave Warner in the gully as Vijay is beaten by Mitchell Starc. But he collects four runs to go to 22.
India 0-32 in the ninth over. Indian captain MS Dhoni breathing a little easier now after calling heads, winning the toss and electing to bat. Curiously, it’s the third time India has won the toss at the Gabba but the first time it has ever batted.
11.13am: Josh Hazlewood is underway as a Test cricketer, bowling a nicely-shaped opening delivery to Vijay. He’s renowned for his Glenn McGrath-like accuracy, Hazlewood, which made it appropriate for the great fast bowler to present him with his baggy green cap before the start of play. He’s started off at 134KM/H pace but should build on that as he warms up. Shouldn’t take long today.

11.07am: HERE WE GO! Mitchell Johnson comes in to bowl to Murali Vijay. And he shoulders arms as this true Gabba pitch allows the batsmen to do. Vijay off the mark with a single to mid-wicket off the fifth ball. What he would have given for that run in Adelaide last Saturday when he was dismissed for 99. Steamy 35 degree Brisbane day so Australia will need to strike early or this could end up being a long hard day.

10.51am: Both teams observe a minute’s silence for the Sydney siege victims.
10.47am: By replacing Shami with Yadav, India has gone for raw pace over Shami’s sideways movement. Yadav, Aaron and Ishant are India’s quickest three pacemen. Shami is unfortunate as this track would suit his variations.
10.39am: Australia will not be perturbed about having first use of the pitch. India has made three changes. MS Dhoni, Ravi Ashwin and Umesh Yadav are in for Wriddhiman Saha, Karn Sharma and Mohammed Shami.
10.32am: MS Dhoni has won the toss and has elected to bat. All the talk has been about the green wicket but the Gabba is chock full of runs after the new ball loses its sheen.
10.31am: Welcome to the Gabba. Steve Smith is in his brand new captain’s blazer but will be glad to be rid of it after the toss on a day in which the temperature is forecast to hit a steamy 35C. The blazer was presented by Mark Taylor and Glenn McGrath gave a long address before handing Josh Hazlewood his cap. Barry ``Nugget’’ Rees is on the field too, in full whites.
