RACEHORSES worth millions of dollars were evacuated on Tuesday night from the country training centre of leading trainer David Hayes as bushfires bore down on the property.
Hayes and dozens of others were at the $25 million property, fending off the fires.
In a brief mobile phone exchange Hayes said: “Can’t talk I’m trying to put the fire out.’’
He confirmed the 60-plus horses in stables and day paddocks had been relocated.
The CFA advised that residents were in “immediate danger†and urged residents to leave immediately.
The fire began at Longrod East, near Euroa, and headed south towards Creighton’s Creek.
The Euroa development followed news earlier in the day that a fire came within two kilometres of Hayes’ old property at Angaston in the Barossa Valley.
Hayes has enjoyed a resurgent spring after beginning a new partnership with his nephew Tom Dabernig.
The Hayes rebuild at Euroa has been well publicised. It has taken years and has been beset with frustrating setbacks.
Hayes trained last Sunday’s Hong Kong Cup third placegetter Criterion, who is still in quarantine.
