FRENCH World Cup winner and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has announced his retirement from football to sign a lucrative TV deal.
Henry, 37, lifted more than 35 major individual and team trophies including the World Cup and European Championship for France, the Champions League and La Liga with Barcelona, the Premier League and FA Cup at Arsenal, the French League at Monaco and the MLS Shield with the New York Red Bulls.
He was twice winner of the European Golden boot, four times winner of the English Premier League Golden Boot, five times winner of the French Player of the Year, three-time winner of the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year at Arsenal and twice winner of the PFA Players’ Player of the Year.
Henry has joined Sky Sports as a pundit in a multi-million pound deal.
“After 20 years in the game I have decided to retire,†Henry said on his Facebook page.
“It has been an incredible journey ... I’ve had some amazing memories (mostly good) and a wonderful experience. I hope you enjoyed watching as much as I have enjoyed taking part.â€
Henry is the all-time leading goalscorer in the history of both Arsenal and France. He was also an integral member of the historic Arsenal Premier League-winning ‘Invincible’ team of 2004.
He has been recently linked to a return as an assistant coach at Arsenal and is considered a lng term successor to Arsene Wenger.
He plans to start work on his coaching badges in January.
“I don’t know if I can be a good coach or not, but the desire is there,†said Henry. “We’ll see. Just because you can play the game doesn’t mean you can teach it — dealing with egos and lifting people.â€
“The decision was not too hard to be honest,†he added. “It is hard to leave the game you love and everything you used to do on a daily basis. But I am pleased with what I’ve done and I’ve got no regrets. Things happen for a reason. It’s hard and not hard.
“I love the game and I still think I can give a lot to the game. I’m retiring and I’m not yet involved with any team. In the meantime, I can give back to the game on TV and make people understand some stuff they maybe don’t already. The job of an analyst is to make people understand in a simple way what the game means. It will be our job to make sure we bring the game closer to people.â€
Wenger has already claimed that Henry will “certainly†return to Arsenal in some capacity.
