Santa looks set to bring Melburnians a mild and mostly sunny Christmas Day.

Meteorologists at the Fairfax-owned Weatherzone have forecast a top of 26 degrees for the day.

The prediction allays concern that extreme national weather could make its way south for the festivities.

NSW and Queensland have both recently experienced extended hot and stormy conditions.

A caller to radio station 3AW said on Monday a heatwave predicted for Perth next week could make its way to Melbourne for Christmas.

But Weatherzone meteorologist Brett Dutschke said Christmas Day should be mild.

There was still a possibility of showers ("It is Melbourne.") but Mr Dutschke said it shouldn't result in anything long lasting.

"It's as pleasant a Christmas Day as anyone could expect," he said.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Scott Williams said there had been very high temperatures in inland Australia earlier this year that had not reached Victoria.

"You've got to get northerly winds to push that hot air down into Victoria," he said.

Mr Williams said the bureau would not release its festive prediction until Thursday, but "it looks unlikely that there'll be a heatwave for Christmas".
