As Australians absorb the violent end to Sydney's Lindt Cafe siege, airstrikes by coalition forces on Islamic State terrorists in Syria and Iraq continue.

The international force, led by the US and including Australia, Britain, France and other nations, have attacked IS sites as part of Operation Inherent Resolve.

In Syria, eight fighter and bomber airstrikes near Kobani destroyed nine IS fighting positions, two IS buildings and two IS staging positions, Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve officials reported on Monday.

A strike near abu-Kamal destroyed an IS vehicle.

In Iraq, US and partner nation military forces conducted nine airstrikes using fighter, bomber, attack and remotely-piloted aircraft.

Three airstrikes near Mosul destroyed an IS fighting position, struck three tactical IS units and suppressed an IS heavy machine gun position and near Sinjar an IS compound was struck.

An airstrike near Ramadi hit two IS vehicles and near Samarra a tactical IS unit was bombed.

All aircraft returned to base safely, officials said, noting that airstrike assessments are based on initial reports.

Coalition nations conducting airstrikes in Iraq include the US, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

Coalition nations conducting airstrikes in Syria include the US, Bahrain, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
