WANT to be king of your own castle? Or maybe rule as the Queen of your own empire?

Buy one of these castles and you’ll be half way there.

There are dozens of private castles on the market according to real estate group Lionard Luxury Real Estate.

It has a castle listed in Piedmont, in Tuscany which dates back to the XIth century and overlooking the Monferrato hills.

It has been previously renovated during its long history. During the XVIIIth century the oldest part of the castle was renovated to create a large neo-Gothic dining room and a theatre above it decorated with frescoes showing episodes from Don Quixote.

There is a small chapel which is still consecrated today.

On the upper level are three apartments. The main floor has two suites with frescoed walls.

There is also a dance hall, a music hall, and library. There are 12 bedrooms in all.

The castle sits on 19ha of land which has a swimming pool.

According to Lionard Luxury Real Estate CEO Dimitri Corti, prices for castles range from between $1800 per square metre to $12,900 per square metre.

“On our website alone, we have 37 castles for sale, but there are over 70 throughout Italy in our portfolio,’’ he said.

Mr Corti said the high maintenance costs and the taxes on the properties had convinced some families who have owned the castles for generations to consider selling.
