Officers believe the 52-year-old victim had a “verbal altercation” with the teenagers, who were attempting to gatecrash a party in his block of flats in Enfield on Sunday evening, the BBC reports.

“Our initial inquiries have established there was a supervised party taking place at another address within the block and the group of males were trying to gain access to this,” said Detective Chief Inspector Neale Baldock.

“The victim and this group were not known to each other. What started as a minor verbal altercation has escalated into a shocking act of violence.”

The man was pronounced dead at the scene around 8.30pm, according to the Independent. Formal identification is yet to take place.

He was with an unidentified woman at the time of the attack.

Two boys are understood to have followed him into the building and stabbed him. The teenagers remain in custody.
