THIS will be one of the biggest and most emotional days in rugby league history.
To commemorate 100 years since the Anzac landings at Gallipoli, the NRL will play five games on April 25 next year.
Anzac Day — which falls on a Saturday next year — will feature games in five cities across Australia and New Zealand over a marathon 10 hours, and viewers can watch every minute live.
As part of the NRL’s blockbuster schedule:
*THE Warriors will host the Gold Coast Titans at midday in the first Anzac Day NRL match played in New Zealand;
*NEWCASTLE play North Queensland at 2pm;
*THE Sydney Roosters host traditional Anzac Day rivals St George Illawarra at Allianz Stadium at 4pm;
MELBOURNE take on Manly in the 6pm timeslot; and
*THE Broncos and Parramatta round out the 10-hour footy feast with an 8pm kick-off in Brisbane.
The NRL’s head of commercial, Paul Kind, said Anzac Day next year would be a “significant national event and the NRL wanted to contribute to it.â€
“This is a special day, a day when everyone will be reflecting on the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings,†Kind said.
“We have always had a close relationship with the RSL and we want to play our part in the commemorations.â€
It will be the first time an NRL game will be in New Zealand on Anzac Day.
“Anzac Day is so emotional — it is one of the best days of the year for proud Australians and also one of the best on the rugby league calendar,†NSW coach Laurie Daley said.
“The build-up to the traditional Roosters-Dragons game always gives me goosebumps. The last post ... the raw emotion is there for everyone to feel.
“Now five games will be played throughout five cities. It will be a wonderful way to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Anzacs landing in Gallipoli.â€
There will be one Friday night game that round — Canterbury against Wests Tigers — two games on Sunday — Panthers versus the Sharks and premiers South Sydney against Ricky Stuart’s Raiders.
“Naturally, the focus of the day will be on the Anzac commemorations,†Kind said.
“It will also be an incredible day of football as the game shifts to five different cities in succession, allowing rugby league to recognise and commemorate the ANZAC spirit.â€
The traditional NRL Anzac Day games have been Sydney Roosters against St George Illawarra and Melbourne versus New Zealand Warriors at AAMI Park.
Saints and the Roosters have played on Anzac Day since 2002, the Storm-Warriors since 2009. A record crowd of 40,752 attended the Dragons-Roosters game in 2013.
Broncos chief executive Paul White said his club would be “proud†to host a match on Anzac Day.
“Anzac Day is a great tradition and the Broncos are very proud to be a part of that,†White said.
“We held a match on Anzac Day this year (against South Sydney) and it was a roaring success. We are certain next year will be the same.â€
Knights CEO Matt Gidley added: “Anzac Day is one of the most important days of the year for Australians and New Zealanders, and the Knights are proud to have the opportunity to host a game that commemorates such a special event.
“It is the first time the Knights have hosted such an important game, which will be an occasion for players and our members and fans to reflect, remember and pay tribute.â€
The NRL is expected to release its anticipated 2015 draw on Monday.
