A bushfire that caused an emergency situation in Perth's outer north-eastern suburbs on Sunday is now under control and poses no threat to lives or houses.

An emergency warning was issued for parts of Brabham and Henley Brook in the City of Swan but was downgraded to an alert just after 8:30pm (AWST).

The fire was reported shortly after 1:00pm and burnt through 120 hectares of grass and bushland.

Spokesman for the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES), Ryan Murray, said the fire turned away from homes during Sunday evening, and had since been heading in a north-easterly direction.

But he said an earlier belief that the fire had been contained was incorrect.

"The situation is the fire's not contained. It's gone over 120 hectares. The fire has settled, crews will be working throughout the night to contain it," Mr Murray said.

No properties were lost in the fire, but a new housing estate was earlier evacuated as flames up to 15 metres high came close.

"I would estimate there might've been about 20 properties under threat at one stage," North Coast Metropolitan Superintendent Allan Riley said.

Roads in the area were closed and motorists were asked to avoid the area due to the amount of smoke in the air.

An evacuation centre was set up at the Altone Park Recreation Centre.
