“THIS is the first time that I’ll co-host Carols in the Domain. It is very exciting. I’ve always wanted to host it.
The Koch family is a family of Christmas nuts. Each year I get allocated three tickets but my entire family of 14, including the grand kids, always come along.
We’ve been going to Carols for years and the sheer joy that everyone has on that night, it is a bit of magic.
The world is so grumpy at the moment — glass half empty rather than half full in their outlook.

When it comes to Carols everybody is positive and upbeat.
All of a sudden, everyone stops after a busy year of highs and lows and Carols makes you appreciate what you’ve got.
In the overall scheme of things most Australians have a terrific life compared to anywhere else and I think we need reminding of it. That is what the Christmas spirit is all about — thinking of others.

It is going to be a terrific night and I’ll have my four grandchildren there at an age when they can really appreciate it.
It is terrific to be co-hosting Carols with the rest of the Sunrise team. You wouldn’t get up the ungodly hours that we do day in and day out if you didn’t get on well with the people who are your colleagues. Sunrise is like a family. I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate Christmas than to host Carols with my best mates on TV.
We’re all different. We’re all at different stages of our life but we all have a similar sense of humour and common values.
Maybe being Chairman of the Port Adelaide Football Club has reminded people that I do come from a business background and I do have a few clues.

Even though we have a lot of fun on Sunrise as well as covering the serious news stories, none of us are one-dimensional.
My involvement with Port and Adelaide in general has maybe shown people that I have a lot of different dimensions and I’m passionate about what I do.
I chair the Organ and Tissue Authority which is reforming the organ transplant system in Australia.
I have the Koch Centre for Youth at Macquarie Fields which tries to get street kids back into education.
Berretts has his Tour de Cure and Sam has her commitment to helping returned servicemen who are injured in the line of duty.

That is what Sunrise does. We like to think of Sunrise not only as a great place to work but where we can get things achieved. Maybe people are noticing and appreciating that a bit. My Christmas tradition is that I buy everyone in the immediate family matching pairs of pyjamas every year. I decide the theme and go and buy them and it is not revealed until Christmas morning. The grandkids, especially, just love that as part of their Christmas. Last year I also started building a Santa’s Cave in our living room. I am endeavouring to build on that each year.â€
