PHILLIP Hughes’ older brother Jason made an emotional return to Sydney grade cricket today and scored 63 _ the exact score his sibling was on when his life effectively finished.
Jason was encouraged by his little brother to move to leave their NSW home town of Macksville and move to Sydney to play cricket and pursue a career.
He plays first division for Mosman and had been absent from the first innings after his brother’s funeral, but was picked in the team so he could bat today.
Phillip’s close friend Dan Smith made 127 for Sydney in the first innings of the grade game at Drummoyne Oval, which ended in a draw.
According to people at the ground, Jason was emotional when he began his innings and when he reached 50.
Mosman was chasing hard and he was slogging when dismissed. Reports say he didn’t realise how many runs he was until he walked off after being caught.
Jason recalled at the funeral how he had to encourage his reluctant little brother to join his side when they were short one day. Phillip scored 25 and fell in love with the game immediately.
Jason spoke at his brother’s funeral in Macksville 10 days ago.
“You have given me confidence, strength, you supported me and gave me a strong desire to succeed,†he said. “Everyone will have memories of you but I will cherish our childhood memories forever.
“Our backyard cricket battles were incredible. You always had to win and keep batting on for days. I bowled to you for hours and even though my body was sore and tired, I’m very glad that I played a major part in you achieving your dreams.
“The reason that I’m in Sydney and where I am today is mainly because of you. You told me to move to Sydney when I just turned 21 and I didn’t hesitate to move. I was on the first flight because I wanted to share this journey with you.â€
