GANGLAND figure Bassam Hamzy's mother has become the notorious family's latest shooting victim after being gunned down in her home in Sydney's west.
NEIGHBOURS say 57-year-old Lola Hamzy had only recently returned from Lebanon and was home alone when she was shot through her front door on Thursday night.
Ms Hamzy, the mother of notorious criminal and jailed Brothers for Life (B4L) gang figurehead Bassam Hamzy, was shot in the stomach and called triple-0 herself. She was rushed from her Auburn home to hospital, where she remains in a serious but stable condition. Neighbours said the mother-of-five had divorced her husband, believed to be Khaled Hamzy, the father of 35-year-old Bassam. Police are not sure why the underworld figure's mother was targeted and B4L activity has been quiet in recent months since a police crackdown. "There's nothing to suggest this was a targeted attack ... we don't know what the motivation for the shooting is," Inspector Alan Janson told reporters. Another female Hamzy relative was shot in similar circumstances last year. Maha Hamze, Bassam's aunt, was shot several times through her front door in Auburn in March 2013. The shooting was sparked by a debt recovery fee feud between her son, Bilal Hamze, and another man. Another family member, Bassam's cousin Mahmoud Hamzy, was shot dead in Revesby Heights in 2013. Bassam is in the middle of a long stint in jail over a shooting murder in 1998 and for running a drug syndicate and ordering kidnappings from his prison cell. His supporters set up the B4L group as a show of solidarity when Hamzy was imprisoned. It is believed his influence started to wane in the late 2000s and an extended family member picked up the B4L mantle and piggy-backed on Bassam's reputation. Bassam allegedly struck up an alliance with Farhad Quami and gave him the nod to fly the B4L flag. Police believe Quami, nicknamed The Afghan, started the Blacktown chapter in 2013, much to the disdain of the Bankstown members. Internal feuding between the chapters sparked a string of shootings and a heavy police response. A series of arrests, including of Quami and Bankstown leader and Bassam's cousin, Mohammed Hamzy, and other senior members were believed to have obliterated the B4L gang.
