DID Joan Rivers get the respect she deserved?
According to her daughter, Melissa Rivers, who penned a tribute for The Hollywood Reporter, her 81-year-old mother didn’t get the proper applause until her death.
“I’ll never get the respect that I deserve until I’m dead,’†Melissa quoted her mother as saying.
“It feels sh*tty because she was right,†she continued. “It’s sad. It is important for me to carry on my mother’s legacy, in my own unique way. I would be letting her down if carrying the torch did not become part of my life — but it will not be all of my life.â€
Elsewhere in the tribute, Melissa praised her mother’s advice and platitudes that would often get the family through tough times as well as put happier times into perspective.
She also noted that she never understood her mother’s “place in history†until she began working with her in 1996. “She did so much as a performer, and she did so much for women and other comics,†Melissa said.
On Tuesday, Joan’s will was filed in court. Although few financial details were released about the late comedienne’s $150 million fortune, several close family members and five staffers will receive unspecified amounts.
Several charities, including Guide Dogs for the Blind in California and Queens-based food pantry God’s Love We Deliver, will receive donations from her estate.
