The mother of Brothers 4 Life founder Bassam Hamzy was shot through the front door of her home in Sydney's west overnight.

Police said a woman, 57, was shot in the stomach when bullets were fired at the house on Albert Road in Auburn about 8.30pm on Thursday.

Paramedics treated Lola Hamzy at the house before taking her to Westmead Hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery.

A hospital spokeswoman said she was in a serious but stable condition on Friday, despite police earlier reporting that she was in a critical condition.

Mrs Hamzy's son Bassam Hamzy, the founder of Brothers 4 Life, was jailed for life in 2002 for a shooting murder at a Sydney nightclub in 1998, and was also convicted for conspiring to murder a witness due to give evidence against him.

Another member of the family, Mahmoud Hamzy, was shot dead in a garage in Revesby Heights in October last year.

Lola Hamzy is the second female family member to be shot through the front door of a house in Auburn in the past two years.

Last year, Maha Hamze, Bassam Hamzy's aunt, was shot through the front door of a house in Auburn.

She suffered eight bullet wounds to her legs when 21 shots were fired from a Glock pistol into the house on March 9.

Police investigation

On Friday, Inspector Al Janson, from the Flemington Local Area Command, said detectives had not been able to speak to the woman due to the severity of her injuries.

Without naming the Hamzy family, Inspector Janson confirmed the woman's family was known to police.

However, he said he did not believe the woman herself was under any criminal investigation.

"The family and the home is known to us and all those lines of inquiries we will look at and explore those. But until we speak to the victim and obtain some further information, we don't have a lot to go on," he said.

Inspector Janson could not say what type of gun was used in the shooting, but said a number of bullets were fired through the front door by an unknown person.

He said the woman lived at the home alone, but it was unclear whether she was the intended target.

"The shots have been fired through a door, so until we speak to her and find out what's going on, we don't have any more than that," he said.

He said it was unclear whether detectives would interview the woman's relatives, including anyone who was in jail.

"If other family members can assist us, then we will gladly take this information," he said.

Lola Hamzy married Khaled Hamzy in Lebanon in 1975 and the couple moved to Australia due to civil unrest later that year.

The couple had five children, including Bassam, and divorced in 1996.

Khaled Hamzy is in jail, having been sentenced in 2010 over his role in a drug supply ring that was operated by Bassam Hamzy via a mobile phone smuggled into Lithgow prison.

Man shot

Detectives do not believe Thursday night's shooting is linked to another shooting in Sydney's west two hours later.

At 10.30pm, a man in his 20s stumbled into the rear foyer of the Liverpool Catholic Club on Hoxton Park Road in Prestons, police said.

The man had been shot in the left arm and was bleeding heavily. It was unclear where the shooting had taken place.

Club staff called police and paramedics, who took the injured man to Liverpool Hospital for treatment.

Liverpool Hospital staff were already treating another man in his 20s who had arrived in the emergency room with a gunshot wound to the shoulder about 10.30pm.

"Police believe the shootings of both men may be related and an investigation is now under way," a NSW Police spokesman said.

He said the motive for the shootings was not immediately clear.

Anyone with information about the shootings has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit the Crime Stoppers online reporting page.
