AFTER touring to 28 countries, the theatrical production Thriller Live has finally landed in Australia — and star MiG Ayesa says he’s glad the extravagant nod to the music of Michael Jackson took its time to arrive.

The Australian performer, who was part of the original “workshop tour” in 2007, which travelled the UK to test a “scaled down version of the show”, said the current version of the musical and visual spectacular is the best he’s ever seen.

“It is a work in progress which is the great thing about the show,” Ayesa said.

“They change the songs, they mix it up, they change the themes and they change the choreography.”

Ayesa, who was also involved in the production in 2012 and rejoined the cast just a month ago in London, said it had since taken on a new life but anything paying homage to the King of Pop was “a difficult thing to get right”.

“Every night you’re always trying to be better and better,” he said.

“But it’s not about being impersonators — that’s not what we’re about.

“We’re about the celebration of his (Jackson’s) life and his music and (trying) to continue on his legacy and bring his music to the people.”

He said the cast, which includes The Voice season one finalist Prinnie Stevens, “don’t ever try to be Michael Jackson” but they all brought their own interpretations to his work.

“It’s a balance — we don’t want to be impersonators yet we want to add the flavour,” he said.

“It comes with a great responsibility too because there’s a lot of Michael Jackson fans out there … And some people are really fanatical about getting everything right.

“So far, we’ve had no problems and no complaints from any fan — they come and they love the show.”

Thriller Live, which just wrapped its record-breaking sixth year in London’s West End, is a two-hour show spanning across Jackson’s 45-year musical history, featuring songs including I Want You Back, ABC, The Way You Make Me Feel, Smooth Criminal, Beat It and Billie Jean.

The high-energy show, which combines dance, video footage, stunning costumes and effects, has been seen by more than 3 million people around the world and became the longest running show ever at London’s Lyric Theatre, where it debuted in 2009.

It brings with it to Australia a touring company of 45 international and Australian performers, musicians and crew.

New York-based Ayesa, who was born in the Philippines but migrated to Australia at the age of two, said Jackson’s music had become part of his life’s soundtrack from a very young age.

“Off The Wall, when that came out, wow,” he said.

“I still think Off The Wall is my favourite Michael Jackson album, but then Thriller came out and I don’t think I took that record off the record player the whole year.”

Ayesa, who reprised the role of Galileo in the 10th Anniversary World Arena Tour of We Will Rock You last year, said he plans to stay in Perth for Christmas with his brother Andrew, who lives here, following the WA run, for a big family gathering, which will see his dad fly in from Tasmania to be with them.

●Thriller Live continues until December 21 at Crown Theatre Perth with tickets through Ticketek.
