HAVE you ever checked your phone or computer to see that the date has mysteriously reverted back to January 1st, 1970?

For those who have encountered this strange phenomena you may have thought it was simply a random glitch in the software. But it turns out that there is a reason why the device relapses to the start of the disco era — and the answer is a nice little piece of technology trivia.

It all comes down to the computer operating system that, in one way or another, is used on a majority of servers, work stations and mobile devices.

It is called UNIX and was launched in November of 1971. After working out the kinks, the ‘epoch date’ was set to the beginning of the decade, January 1970 GMT.

This means that all time measurement units are counted from this point and if the time stamp is somehow reset, the clock will display January 1970.

You can learn more about UNIX from its creators here.
