The Australian Bureau of Statistics has confirmed the ascendancy of Daniel Andrews to become Victorian premier will not stop the transfer of up to 250 jobs from Canberra to Geelong. 

The announcement of a centre of excellence for the Victorian city was made in November just before the state's election.

It is believed the Victorian state government had little responsibility for the shifting of jobs even though soon-to-be deposed Liberal premier Denis Napthine was at the time photographed signing an agreement to "bring the ABS to Geelong".

The federal government has oversight of the federal public service including the ABS and at the time of the announcement Dr Napthine spoke of his government facilitating the move with funding given to Deakin University which would be a partner in the project. 

The announcement was labelled as pork barreling by Fraser MP Andrew Leigh - many of the jobs were expected to be torn from his electorate in Canberra - but there could still be some votes left for the Coalition in the shifting of jobs even though Dr Napthine's party did not win the election.

Federal Liberal MP Sarah Henderson holds the seat of Corangamite which takes in a significant part of Geelong.

She sat on a government panel looking at ways to offset the winding down of the car manufacturing industry which recommended the move. 

In November she told a reporter the Australian Government had asked the ABS to consider relocating some of its functions, after which the public service had entered into negotiations with Deakin University.
