WINNING the X Factor was beyond her wildest dreams.
Becoming an inspiration to others both as a performer and as a face of multicultural Australia has meant even more to Dami Im.
The beautiful singer, who will perform the U2 anthem One and present the Inspiration medal at today’s Pride Of Australia national ceremony in Sydney.
She said many fans had commented after her win that they were overjoyed Australians had rallied behind the Korean-born during her X Factor campaign.
“I have met lots of people from Asian backgrounds since X Factor who have told me they hadn’t thought a Korean person could be included in the pop mainstream here,†she said.
“They feel their identity and position is more solid and part of the community, instead of feeling hidden.â€
DAMI IM: My X Factor win showed Australians are less racist
Im has since made a successful transition to the pop charts with two platinum singles, Alive and Super Love and her most recent effort Gladiator going gold.
She is now on her first tour, opening for American superstar John Legend.
Im said one of the most poignant moments of her post-show career came when a Korean mother asked the singer to speak to her son who was being bullied at school.
“I told him that when I was young, people used to tease me because of my small eyes but look what happened to me. I won X Factor and lots of people now respect me for who I am,†she said.
Despite her success, Im confesses she still struggles feeling at ease in a room full of strangers, an occupational hazard for any performer.
“That is still daunting for me but as my husband Noah always reminds me, I have been put into the position to help people, to be a role model for people so you have to have courage,†she said.
* The Pride of Australia National Ceremony will be broadcast by Network Ten on ONE, Saturday December 13 at 9.30pm.
