IT was a rainy but memorable day in Adelaide as Steve Smith and Michael Clarke notched brilliant hundreds on day two of the first Test against India.

Clarke will steal the headlines, and rightly so, for his fighting hundred that came despite a serious back injury that could yet see him ruled out of the rest of the series.

But it was Smith who put on a true batting masterclass, finishing the day unbeaten on 162 - his highest Test score - as the Aussies went to stumps at 7-517 when bad light stopped play shortly after 6pm local time.

Rain delays were peppered throughout a frustrating day, but the most frustrated party was undoubtedly the Indian side, which looked bereft of ideas on a day when just one wicket fell when Clarke was caught for 128 off the bowling of Karn Sharma.
