A QANTAS flight from Hobart to Melbourne had to turn back 20 minutes into the journey over a technical issue this evening.

The Boeing 717 took off from Hobart at 5.20pm on Tuesday before the pilot noticed an indicator light showing a “minor system issue,” a Qantas spokeswoman said.

The aircraft returned to Hobart, where engineers fixed the problem and the flight left eventually left for Melbourne at 7.40pm, landing about 9pm.

It is the fourth unscheduled landing involving a Qantas plane in 48 hours.

On Monday, two planes made emergency landings at Perth Airport because of an unusual odour, a faulty warning system and issues with the air-conditioning system.

And a Qantas flight on the way to Dallas turned back to Sydney four hours into the flight because of problems with the in-flight entertainment system and troubles with some of the toilets.

Qantas chief Alan Joyce played down the recent troubles, saying such events “happen all the time”.

“We have really high reliability. We have low levels of turnbacks compared to most of the world fleets,” Mr Joyce told reporters today.
