The man, aged in his 30s, could have faced disciplinary action from the NSW Fire and Rescue depending on the sentence of the six charges he has pleaded guilty to, stemming back to July.

However the on-call firefighter submitted his resignation from the service on December 2.

Police allege in court documents the man made “full and frank” admissions to downloading and disseminating “thousands” of images, videos and child abuse material.

It would take months to seize all the material, police said.

Police will allege the man signed up to file sharing website GigaTribe in April and began using it to download child abuse material from other users with common interests.

During an online conversation using the name “Tommyfun1’’ in July, police allege in the documents the man wrote, “Yeah, I like pre-teen”.

It is alleged the man then provided passwords to his account to other users, one who downloaded 83 files and another who downloaded 6000 files.

“They contained material classed in each of the six categories of severity from least to most severe,” police said in court documents.

On November 3, police issued a search warrant at the man’s home and seized two laptops and several mobile phones. They said the man told them at the time, “I have been downloading it, I download it on my computer”.

Last month he was granted bail on the condition he live with his parents and not go near or try to approach any child under 16, including his daughter, without supervision of an appropriate agency.

His case was adjourned in the Tweed Heads Local Court yesterday until January 12 for sentencing.
