Brisbane could be hit with hail on Monday afternoon as the Bureau of Meteorology issued a weather warning for the region.

On Monday, warnings were in place across South East Queensland as the region prepared for storms until Friday.

As of 2.15pm, severe thunderstorm warnings for damaging wind, heavy rainfall and large hailstones had been issued for Brisbane, Gold Coast, Ipswich, Moreton Bay, Somerset, Scenic Rim, Southern Downs and Toowoomba council areas.

The warnings cover the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Wide Bay and Burnett, Maranoa and Warrego, Darling Downs and Granite Belt and Southeast Coast forecast districts.

Earlier, an 80 per cent chance of rain was predicted in Brisbane on Monday - and a chance of a severe storm - with between five and 20 millimetres expected to fall, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

A top of 31 degrees is expected.

Storm activity had already developed west of Brisbane early on Monday.

"It's unstable all through South-East Queensland," Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Kevin Hutchins said.

"The potential is for them [the storms] to pop up inland throughout the day and they'll be pushed towards the South East."

"It's likely we'll see some severe storms today and tomorrow. However hailstones like we saw last week are exceedingly rare."

Similar conditions are forecast for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Mr Hutchins said there was also a chance of rain on Friday, but storms were not expected on the weekend.

The city recorded about 12 millimetres of rain across Saturday and Sunday.
