A MAN jailed for five months for stealing a car was released from incarceration only to find within 30 minutes of freedom what he had been missing.

That is all the time it took for 21-year-old Kyle Matthews to steal another car, The Smoking Gun reported.

Matthews, of Lake Stevens, had been released from Whitman County Jail in Colfax, Washington, and then after a short walk jumped into a black 1972 Volvo in a car park, which had its engine running.

The car’s owner Stephen B Passmore had met his daughter Pamela A Passmore and left the engine running with the key in the ignition.

“Within about 30 minutes Mr. Matthews was taken back into custody and is now looking at new charges for theft of a motor vehicle,” Whitman County Sheriff, Brett Myers told KLEWTV.

“So his time free from jail was short lived.”

Matthews allegedly ran from the vehicle when it was stopped by police. He was brought down after a chase by a state trooper.

He was returned to the county jail, where he is being held without bail for auto theft, possession of stolen property, attempting to elude, and other charges.
