People power ... One Big Switch has secured a deal for shoppers to save five per cent when shopping at Woolworths Supermarkets. That’s good news for regulars such as Kath Nolan, 39, with children Catie 5, Michael 9, Lara 7 and Ben 2. Source: News Limited

THE high-watt “people power” of the Big Cost of Living Switch is delivering a wider array of deals than was hoped for, headlined by a 5 per cent discount from Woolworths Supermarkets.

Also revealed today is a 30 per cent discount on standard home insurance premiums with Coles. In addition it is offering to beat eligible campaign supporters’ current car cover premiums by at least $50 if they switch to Coles.

Life insurer NobleOak — which undercuts the market by an average of 30 per cent — has come to the party as well.

These deals follow last month’s announcement of a $200 bonus for joining private health cover

provider NIB.

So far, about 82,000 households have joined the campaign — a joint initiative between News Corp Australia and One Big Switch.

“That response has dangled a great big carrot in front of service providers,” said OBS campaign

director Joel Gibson.

“The providers have really risen to the challenge with new and improved offers. Some of them came out of the blue, and there are still more to come.”

The initial support target was 25,000.

The Woolworths deal is for 5 per cent off its supermarket “eGift” cards, valid for 12 months. There is no limit on the value that can be pre-purchased, Mr Gibson said, but terms and conditions apply.

Woolworths spokesman Russell Mahoney said it “knows that everyone could do with a little extra cash in their pocket. Our deal with One Big Switch means a bit of pressure off the family budget.”

The Coles home insurance deal includes free cover for up to $1000 worth of “portable goods” such as laptops.

Its car insurance deal offers free windscreen protection. But there are conditions on both. For instance, to qualify it’s necessary to be a FlyBuys member, or to sign up. And existing Coles Insurance customers are ineligible.

The NobleOak deal includes a $10,000 funeral cover advance. Again, the provider reserves the right to choose who they will cover.

News Corp Australia will earn a commission from people who take up a deal, as will OBS. Mr Gibson said it picked deals based primarily on their competitiveness, not on commissions.

People who are yet to join are still able to assess the deals by registering their interest. There is no cost to register and supporters are not obligated to take up any deals.

Mr Gibson encouraged supporters interested in the deals to read the terms and conditions and product disclosure statements for the policies. These are available at onebigswitch.com.

He also urged supporters to shop around.
