A free trade agreement with Australia will “set the agenda” for the United Kingdom going forward, according to Australian British Chamber of Commerce CEO David McCredie. Details are expected to be announced late Tuesday afternoon Australian time, after Prime Minister Scott Morrison met with Prime Minister Boris Johnson for over two hours to discuss the FTA. “This is the first new agreement that the UK are signing into, they’ve rolled other agreements over that they’ve had through the EU with countries like Japan,” he said. “This is the first one that started with a clean sheet of paper that really starts to set their agenda going forward as Secretary of State Liz Truss has said on numerous occasions. “Indeed it has been echoed politically here in Australia that we want to see a gold standard FTA between the two countries. “For the UK this really is a flag waving opportunity to say independent, global Britain is back and they’re keen to do trade with all of the world”.
