The Bureau of Meteorology says a low pressure system near Cocos Island could develop into a cyclone.

“The low pressure system moved passed Cocos Island over the last day or two and it’s moving safely away to the southwest, so it’s going to move offshore,” senior forecaster Peter Otto told NCA NewsWire on Friday.

“There is that moderate risk of it developing into a tropical cyclone later today. But it should stay safely offshore.

“We will see that monsoon trough strengthen over northern Australia into next week and that may give a further chance of a tropical cyclone activity closer to the coast next week, so we need to watch out for that risk.”

It has been a hot week in Perth and other parts of WA, but temperatures are expected to cool down slightly this weekend before getting hot again.

“We’ve reached the peak for much of WA for a little bit — it’s been really quite hot for a number of days now,” Mr Otto said.

The fire danger this weekend will also drop from the very high levels of Friday.

“There will be a bit of an easing in the temperatures generally, but it will still be warm,” Mr Otto said.

Here’s a rundown on the weather across the rest of the nation:

Queensland and NSW

There is a risk into next week of heavy rain across the north tropical coast of Queensland.

“It has moderated somewhat in the last few days, but that risk increases as the monsoon trough strengthens again,” Mr Otto said.

Southeast Queensland and northeast NSW will experience showers and storms over the weekend and into next week.

“There’s a risk of them needing warnings - some of them could be severe,” Mr Otto said.

Victoria and Tasmania

“Tonight there’s a chance of dusting of snow in Victoria,” Mr Otto said.

“It’s quite cool for this time of year.

“It will only be for tonight and into tomorrow morning, then that risk should go away.”

The snow is expected on alpine peaks at levels of 1400m.

Cool weather is also expected in Tasmania.

South Australia

The weather will be reasonably mild for this time of year, with the forecast fine and sunny.

Northern Territory

Active showers and storms are expected for the top end and they will be getting more active next week with the monsoon trough developing.

Clear skies are expected but it may be a little cool for this time of year.
