The Australian dollar has risen to 72 US cents overnight, up from Wednesday’s 71.72 US cents.

The Aussie dollar buys 1.08 New Zealand dollars, 76 Japanese yen, 5 Chinese yuan renminbi, 60 Euro cents and 54 British pence.

Australia’s share market closed lower on Wednesday night, and hovered around the 6,000 points mark after investors were surprised by a Queensland decision to close its borders.

The S&P/ASX200 benchmark index closed on Wednesday lower by 36.3 points, or 0.6 per cent, at 6001.3 points, while the All Ordinaries index closed lower by 30.6 points, or 0.5 per cent, at 6135.9.

While US markets gave a positive lead, the economic struggle with the coronavirus pandemic and Tuesday’s gains of almost two per cent meant most investors decided to take profits.

CommSec market analyst James Tao was not surprised by the result.

“It was always going to be a tough session following yesterday’s big gains,” he said.

“What we’ve seen of late is the Aussie market moving sideways and lacking momentum.”
