A Glen Osmond home offers a tranquil escape from city life and a feeling of being in the Hollywood Hills, despite being just 10 minutes from the city in traffic.

Vendor Todd bought the home in 2007, attracted by its views, serene locale and potential for a renovation.

Buying a home now cheaper than renting one

Why one warehouse lasted just three days on the market

“It looks grand as you drive up to the property and it has quite an impressive stance about it,” he says.

“It looks a lot different from when I bought it – I’ve taken out a few internal walls, rendered it, tidied up everything and put the pool in out the back, and done some landscaping out the front – it was basically a shell when we bought it. You can just walk in and enjoy it as it is, because everything’s been done, but yet if you want to put your own touch on it there’s still scope there for that. We built it to last and didn’t cut corners anywhere – it’s all quality and designed to be as low-maintenance as possible. It’s also incredibly practical in that you can have the parents getting their own space on the top floor and then have a teenager’s retreat downstairs – it’s really got that great privacy and separation about it.”

The home has four bedrooms over its two levels. Three of these are set on the upper floor, including the master suite which is complete with a walk-in robe and a luxe ensuite with a shower, a toilet and a dual vanity. The other two both have built-in robes and are serviced by a family bathroom with a separate bath and shower.

The heart of the home is the open-plan kitchen and dining area – complete with an island bench and a walk-in pantry – and opening to a large balcony at the front, and a separate outdoor entertainment area overlooking a sparkling in-ground pool at the rear. A more formal lounge area is nearby, offering breathtaking views over the city.

“For entertaining, it works brilliantly because you can be prepping in the kitchen, and able to see right through to the lounge room and out to the outdoor and pool area, so it just works really well,” Todd says.

“Because I’m in the wine game, I’ve had my fair share of parties there entertaining international distributors and so on, and we’ve hosted for around 60 people there are lots of little nooks where people can shoot off to have some privacy among the main party.”

On the lower level is the fourth bedroom, a family room, a toilet, a storage area and a 6m x 8m garage.

“I used to have a cinema downstairs where the fourth bedroom used to be, and there’s a cellar or storage area in the garage too – we toyed with the idea of putting in a shower and wet area as well, which the new purchasers could do, and that way they’d have a fully self-contained granny flat down there as well,” Todd says.

As beautiful as the home is, and as proud as Todd is of the transformation he has given it, the things he’ll miss the most when he sells will be its location and feeling of peace and tranquillity it brings. “I love the feel and vibe of it,” he says. “I’ve had a couple of American friends come through and they loved it and kept going on about the LA Hills vibe it has.

It’s like a retreat and driving home, it feels like you’re going out to the country, but, even with traffic, you’re into the city in 10, 15 minutes maximum.

“On a clear day, from the breakfast bar you can look out over the city and on a clear day you can see right out over Glenelg and down south as well. It’s quite terraced, so if you go up to the back of the block, to the higher part, the views from up there are just incredible.

“It’s been a great home and I’m sure it will be for the next family that buys it.”
