There are more than 150 different locations available for COVID-19 testing across Victoria with at least 1600 contact tracers brought in to help including some based in interstate cities.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews on Saturday said they had carried out 25,730 tests in 24 hours and thanked residents for their contribution to the “collective fight against this virus”.

“The numbers are absolute bigger than they’ve ever been,” he said.

“We are doing more testing than we’ve ever done.

“We’ve had days where we’ve done 25,000 and the next day, it might be 10,000 or 12,000. The difference this time is the consistency. We’re getting that 20-25,000 every day.”

Health Minister Jenny Mikakos announced a number of new sites had opened to deal with the thousands of people seeking tests after the state recorded 216 new coronavirus cases.

She said they aimed to provide a testing site at a maximum distance of 10km away for everyone within the locked down areas of metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire.

The department is averaging between two to three days to return results, Ms Mikakos said.

Anyone with symptoms can be tested at their local GP, respiratory clinics based at a GP, Victorian hospital or Community Health Centre, a drive-through testing site or regional walk-through clinic.

Speaking about the new clinics, Ms Mikakos said Woodland Waters Reserve in Mernda will be open 9.30am to 4.30pm seven days a week.

There is a drive-through site at Wooden Reserve in Tarneit from Monday, July 13 operating from 10am to 4pm daily.

“In addition, Mornington Peninsula Health will commence a mobile testing service to different parts of that community from Monday,” she said.

“They will be advising the local community of locations as that van moves around.”

Diamond Valley Sports Centre in Greensborough will start its drive-through site on Tuesday, with available hours and days yet to be confirmed.

Melbourne Airport is also open for testing and according to the Department of Health and Human Services, it has “minimal wait times”.

The clinic is located at Terminal 4, Level 2, Melbourne Airport and motorists are advised to take the Mercer Drive exit off the Tullamarine Freeway, then go up the T4 ramp.

As of Saturday, these were the following wait times at popular testing sites: Chadstone Golfers Drive (90 minutes), Northland (70 minutes), Westfield Airport West (50 minutes), Bunnings Caroline Springs (45 minutes), Watergardens (40 minutes), West Footscray Bunnings (30 minutes), Monash University – Frankston (30 minutes).

Ms Mikakos said there are “significant efforts” being made to provide further access to sites.

The health department has developed a map showing available test locations and wait times.

HUNDREDS OF INTERSTATE CONTACT TRACERS

Ms Mikakos said they have a “strong” public health team of 1300 people but are using about 300 staff from interstate.

She thanked her health minister counterparts for the extra assistance on Thursday.

“Some of those individuals are doing that work remotely from their home cities, home states, and some have come to Melbourne to assist us as well,” she said.

“We are in the process of growing our contact tracing team further.”

Mr Andrews said the 1300-strong team was “more than has ever been the case”.

“There are 300-plus people from interstate, many of whom are very senior public health physicians who provide co-ordination support, deal with some of the more complex cases and we are deeply grateful to our interstate colleagues for giving us that additional capacity,” he said.
