Japan’s master animator Hayao Miyazaki went back to basics with this enchanting 2008 modern fairytale about a fish who becomes a little girl (voiced by Noah Cyrus in this English-dubbed version). Following his breakthrough Donnie Darko, writer-director Richard Kelly went berserk in the best sense with this sprawling, cartoonish, weirdly prescient 2006 science-fiction satire, set in a near-future Los Angeles on the verge of apocalypse. The huge cast includes Dwayne Johnson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Justin Timberlake and half the cast of Saturday Night Live. MUBI.

The original hip-hop stoner comedy, made in 1995 and still a career highlight for first-time director F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton). Co-writer Ice Cube and Chris Tucker play a couple of slackers from the 'hood attempting, not very energetically, to find the cash to appease their dealer (Faizon Love) before the day is out.
