An art deco-inspired mansion is believed to have set a new record for the suburb of Griffith, selling at a public auction for $4,000,050 at the weekend.
Set on a landholding of more than 1200sqm in the heritage precinct, the residence at 13 Bass Gardens has retained some of its history while morphing into a modern-day abode.

Why these two Canberra homes are most viewed in nation
While selling agent Mario Sanfrancesco from Blackshaw Manuka, would not disclose the sale price, citing a confidentiality arrangement, he confirmed it had eclipsed Griffith’s record price of $3.8 million.
“The current record for Griffith was $3.8 million set a couple of years ago,” Sanfrancesco says.
“There were four registered parties and three people bidding. In the end it sold to a local family that currently resides in the inner south.”
The Bass Gardens record comes hot on the heels of several other recent notable property transactions around Canberra.
These include the massive designer home with a 10-car garage at 7 Langtree Crescent, Crace which sold for $1.63 million in early February and the original 1950s home at 72 Arthur Circle, Forrest, which sold at auction for $2.25 million.
Last weekend, the contemporary pad at 78 Mugga Way, Red Hill on Canberra’s highly regarded “Golden Mile” sold for an undisclosed sum, believed to be in excess of $3.5 million, while the romantic wisteria laden family home at 38 Lawley Street, Deakin changed hands for $1.55 million.
Sanfrancesco says the owners of Bass Gardens retained the existing front facade in keeping with the old Griffith heritage precinct, and constructed a new four-bedroom, three-bathroom contemporary home six years ago.
Among its high-end inclusions is a unique picture window from the rumpus room directly into the depths of the swimming pool, a golf putting green and a dreamy dressing room in the master suite.
“The style of it, because they have retained the original architecture, I think it will be a timeless property. It’s a very classy and sophisticated overall package,” he says.
“Without going over the top, it’s got a nice, classy feel to it.”
There is an 11m heated infinity pool and spa, which is self-cleaning, and an entertaining terrace with a motorised vergola and outdoor kitchen.
The property last sold for $1.26 million in 2011, prior to renovation.
