Enough AFL players to fill a full footy team played the property game in 2019.
Premiership players, Brownlow medallists, All-Australian representatives, club captains and retired legends of the game sold, bought and leased striking homes across Melbourne.
The Herald Sun has compiled some of the standout sales involving footy stars from the year.

ADAM COONEY
On the footy field: 250 AFL games for the Western Bulldogs and Essendon, No. 1 draft pick 2003, Brownlow medallist 2008, All Australian 2008
On the property market: sold 50 Oxford St, Newport for $1.68 million in November
Cooney and his wife Haylea bagged a buyer for their Newport party pad two days before it was due to go to auction, with Barlow McEwan Tribe’s Theo Panay telling the Herald Sun the property attracted offers from six different families.
The Cooneys paid $630,000 for the post-war house a few months after the then-Western Bulldogs star won the 2008 Brownlow and went on to renovate it.
The backyard with a solar-heated pool, barbecue kitchen, a covered patio and sports zone was particularly popular with buyers — as well as the Cooneys’ three kids and party guests over the years.
But the footballer wouldn’t give too much away about shindigs held at the property: “What happens at the Cooney house stays at the Cooney house,” he said.

ALEX RANCE
On the footy field: recently retired following 200-game AFL career with Richmond, premiership player 2017, five-time All Australian, Richmond vice-captain 2017-19, Jack Dyer medallist 2015
On the property market: sold Brighton home off market
Not much is known about Rance’s secret sale from 2019, with Marshall White selling agent Matthew Pillios staying mum on most of the details.
Mr Pillios did reveal in September that the then-injured defender was “extremely happy” with the off-market sale of the property in a “great spot in the heart of Brighton”.
It was rumoured the star — who recently retired, and split from wife Georgia — planned to move back to Richmond, where he sold a penthouse for $678,000 in 2018.

NATHAN JONES
On the footy field: 286 AFL games and counting for Melbourne, Melbourne captain 2014-19, three-time Keith ‘Bluey’ Truscott medallist
On the property market: sold 4 College Grove, Black Rock for $3.055 million in December
The outgoing Dees skipper and his wife Jerri earned $3.055 million for the four-bedroom house they created, at a private auction involving five bidders.
Jones said they were both “pretty hands on” with the building, interior and landscape design of the stylish property, which they’d owned since December 2013.
“(We) invested a lot of time, passion and love into it to create a beautiful family home for us to enjoy,” he said. “I probably see a future in going down that route, particularly when I finish footy.”
Marshall White’s Matthew Pillios said the downsizing buyers were set for “the easiest next 30 years of their life” at the stylish abode.

LINDSAY THOMAS
On the footy field: 212 AFL games for North Melbourne and Port Adelaide, dual North Melbourne leading goalkicker, Indigenous All-Stars representative 2009
On the property market: sold 45 Rutherglen Cres, Gowanbrae for $745,000 in April
The retired goal sneak and his wife Hannah sold their four-bedroom house in April, shortly after the pad passed in on a $680,000 vendor bid at auction.
Two new buyers emerged afterwards to go head-to-head for the home, Alexkarbon director Charles Bongiovanni said at the time.
The Thomases bought the double-storey house in 2009, when the footballer was playing his third season for the Kangaroos, and brought each of their three children home to the property.
They moved out when Thomas signed with Port for season 2018.
“(Our youngest) was just five weeks old when we had to start packing,” Ms Thomas said. “It was bittersweet.”

DUSTIN FLETCHER
On the footy field: 400 AFL games for Essendon, dual premiership player, dual All Australian, Crichton medallist 2000
On the property market: sold 91A Wyong St, Keilor East for $785,000 in April
The legendary Bombers defender broke even on his low-maintenance three-bedroom house, selling it after auction in April for the same price he bought it for in 2017.
Nelson Alexander’s David Vaughan said three bidders had contested the home under the hammer, with a downsizer ultimately winning the keys.
Fletcher had shared the home with his family, including his sportsman son Mason, who’s halted a likely AFL career to pursue NFL punting.
The 400-game player planned to upgrade within the Keilor East area.

LEVI GREENWOOD
On the footy field: 152 AFL games and counting for Collingwood and North Melbourne, played in 2018 Grand Final
On the property market: sold 97 Bank St, South Melbourne for $1.175 million in April
The Collingwood midfielder bagged a buyer for his black-and-white home shortly before the Pies’ nailbiting ANZAC Day victory over the Bombers.
Greenwood completely renovated the single-fronted terrace house over two years, after buying it in 2016.
He previously told the Herald Sun he “basically turned it into a skeleton and built it up again”.
The finished product featured a black-and-white colour scheme Greenwood joked was “all for Collingwood”.
The property spent about five months on the market before notching a sale.
The 2018 Grand Finalist and carpentry apprenticeship also had an off-field win in 2017, when he earned $1,307,500 for a Northcote Edwardian he’d also renovated.
