At least two people were killed and numerous homes were destroyed as catastrophic bushfires hit the New South Wales south coast on December 31. State premier Gladys Berejiklian confirmed on the Tuesday that two people had been killed when fires swept through the historic town of Cobargo, while there were “grave concerns” for the safety of a third person. Several firefighters and residents had died during the devastating 2019 fire season, including one volunteer who was killed on Monday night when his fire truck rolled during freak winds. Some 911 homes had be destroyed by fires across the state by Monday morning, according to the NSW Rural Fire Service. In this video, filmed on December 31, a property in Batemans Bay can be seen burning while firefighters work nearby.
