They are long-time supporters of each other personally and professionally. And now, former US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has spoken out in defence of the Duchess of Sussex, saying she has been treated in an “inexplicable” manner by the British media.

“I do want to say that the way she’s been treated is inexplicable,” Clinton told the UK’S Sunday Times.

“If the explanation is that she’s bi-racial, then shame on everybody,” she said, in a joint interview with her daughter, Chelsea Clinton.

“I’m a huge Meghan Markle fan,” the former presidential candidate said.

Clinton’s comments came after she was asked by the Sunday Times about her thoughts on Prince Harry’s move to take legal action against British newspapers for their “ruthless campaign” against the new royal.

Chelsea — who was also interviewed by the Times as the mother-daughter pair promoted their book, The Book of Gutsy Women: Favorite Stories of Courage and Resilience — also voiced her support of the former Suits star-turned-royal.

“She proudly had a career first and has a voice that she thankfully continues to use,” Chelsea said.

“Anyone who has the temerity to break the mould of what has previously been established and expected often, unfortunately, receives criticism and bile that I don’t understand. We’ve seen this pattern repeatedly.”

“I don’t know her, but as someone who respects her, I’m so grateful that she persists, and is unbowed, and is doing work she feels called to do. And isn’t willing to be bullied.”

Meghan publicly supported Clinton during her presidential campaign, calling her then-opposing candidate Donald Trump “divisive” and “misogynistic”.

And the connection between Meghan and the Clintons has continued, with the royals recently hiring Clinton’s former campaign adviser Sara Latham to head their new PR team.

Earlier this month, Prince Harry revealed he had taken legal action against British press over their “ruthless campaign” against his wife.

“Though this action may not be the safe one, it is the right one. Because my deepest fear is history repeating itself. I’ve seen what happens when someone I love is commoditised to the point that they are no longer treated or seen as a real person,” Harry said in an explosive statement.

“I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces,” he said.

“We thank you, the public, for your continued support. It is hugely appreciated. Although it may not seem like it, we really need it.”
