Motorists in Queensland will soon be able to pay their registration fees monthly in a bid to make the costs of owning a car easier to manage.
In just a few months, drivers will have the option of switching over to the monthly payment option, with Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey saying it’s something many Queenslanders have been calling for.
“Across the board, we’re seeing more flexibility when it comes to paying for services and utilities to help Queenslanders better manage household budgets,” Mr Bailey said.
“We recently surveyed Queenslanders and found one-in-five said they wanted to be able to pay rego and third-party insurance monthly.”
Currently, motorists can use direct debit for registration renewals for periods of three, six or 12 months.
The new monthly option will also include a $1.45 surcharge, similar to the extra costs associated with the three and six-month rego periods.
Mr Bailey said the extra option was being introduced to give motorists more flexible payment options.
“We’re introducing one month rego to make it even easier for Queenslanders to manage their payments, just like they would with their phone or internet,” he said.
“The new direct debit service is now being tested, and Queenslanders will be able to sign up online when it’s launched in coming months.”
The Royal Automobile Club of Queensland (RACQ) has backed the monthly payment option.
“RACQ supports this change. #Transport costs make up a huge chunk of the monthly budget, anything that eases the burden of #bills is a good thing,” the organisation wrote on Twitter.
However, shadow minister for transport and main roads, Steve Minnikin, lashed out at Labor over the change, claiming it had introduced the “highest rego fees” in Australia.
“Labor introducing monthly rego payments. They also introduced some of the highest rego fees in the country,” Mr Minnikin tweeted.
“Labor should stop breaking its election promise & not increase car rego above inflation. More smokes & mirrors from @MarkBaileyMP described as ‘foolish’ by the CCC.”
Following the announcement, the RACQ posted a poll on Facebook asking users whether they would take advantage of the new monthly fee option.
Just less than 3000 have voted in the poll, with 61 per cent saying they would “absolutely” use the monthly payment option.
“Would certainly help a lot of people with their budgeting. A little bit more expensive I guess but if it works for u that’s the way to go!” one user said.
“Would be good when you are in the process of selling the vehicle,” another person noted.
But not everyone was impressed by the change.
“I don’t want to have monthly as it would come around so fast it would seem you were paying every day,” one person said.
Monthly registration payments are already available in South Australia and the Northern Territory.
