Jones' career has been on the brink of ending on at least two occasions.

After 66 games with the Western Bulldogs over the course of five seasons, he joined Carlton at the end of 2014.

He was targeted by then Blues' coach Mick Malthouse, who famously called him an "explosive animal" in his first pre-season at the club.

But much like the later part of his Bulldogs career, Jones' start to his stint at Carlton was less than impressive.

In his first two seasons, he kicked 16 goals in 17 games, never kicking more than two goals in a match.

After playing the first half of 2017 in the VFL, Jones returned to the senior side at the other end of the ground, to the surprise of the majority of Carlton supporters.

He played the last 12 games of the year as a dominant defender, compiling five brownlow votes in 12 games as a full back.

Although he's suffered several injuries since becoming a defender, he has been very consistent in the back six.

Jones' list manager – and full back of the century – Stephen Silvagni, described Jones as one of the best defenders in the competition.

“Through sheer hard work and determination, Liam has become an integral part of our backline and has developed into a great leader among our defensive group,” Silvagni said.

“He shows such dedication to his defensive craft and it’s a credit to Liam.

“We hold Liam in such high regard at the Club and we are delighted he will be part of our exciting future.”
