Oh no, not again.

The AFL’s already under fire score review is once again in the spotlight after a goal in the dying stages from Shaun McKernan appeared touched by Adam Kennedy, but wasn’t reviewed.

McKernan’s goal tied the scores before Essendon surged forward and a Cale Hooker goal handed them the lead which held until the final siren as they recorded the 12.5 (77) to 10.11 (71) victory.

But as good as the game was on the field, it’s another contest that has been overshadowed by the system that has been continuously slammed throughout the season.

Gerard Whateley has called for the system to be scrapped and the latest error saw him once again stand his ground.

“Why can’t they call for the score review if there is any doubt, what the hell is the rush to bounce the ball. The system is faulty!” Whateley said on AFL Nation.

After the game it was a hot topic of conversation with Brisbane Lions champion Jonathan Brown questioning how it wasn’t picked up.

“(Adam) Kennedy’s got his left ring finger in a splint,” Brown joked on Fox Footy.

“Clearly his left ring finger … look at that. Clearly touched. How the hell can these part-timers not even pick that up?

“We picked it up in ten seconds. That is a critical point in the game and that drew Essendon level.

“This is the biggest embarrassment in our game since Meat Loaf sang before the Grand Final.”

The reaction from football fans was one of disbelief as the AFL have previously stated they review each and every goal.

Zach Merrett was the architect for Essendon with 28 possessions and seven clearances, with Dyson Heppell (23) and Dylan Shiel (22) also important.

Stephen Coniglio starred for GWS with 33 disposals, while Jeremy Cameron kicked three goals in the gritty arm-wrestle.

Essendon played like they had a point to prove after they were humbled by GWS in their embarrassing season-opener.

The Giants’ high-octane offence and sizzling ball movement was rarely sighted in a first quarter where the physical Bombers set the tone.

But once again, as good as the game was it’s the score review which will dominate the headlines as it adds to an evergrowing list of errors in 2019 that continue the leave egg on the face of the AFL.
