As pictures from the event circulated on social media, armchair critics slammed Tanerelle for the “natural” look, prompting a lengthy missive from the singer on Instagram.

“According to some I missed a critical step yesterday when getting ready. What they don’t know is I literally had a fat ass piece of tape stuck from the bottom of my left boob to the top of my shoulder, looked at it & made a conscious decision to take it off because I actually loved the way my natural breasts looked in comparison to the “perfect” option,” she wrote.

“Last time I checked what I thought about how I look was all that mattered, so I’m gonna keep going with that cause it’d be f***ing impossible to please EVERYONE when it comes to ME.”

Posting photos of her outfit to Twitter, Stephens again faced the backlash head on.

“To all the negative comments about today’s look, I don’t need to lift my breast to wear a f***ing dress. I’m a woman and my natural t**s hang and I f***ing love it and I have no intention of changing it to suit your gaze. I’m out here living my dreams focus on better things,” she wrote.

In fact, Stephens wasn’t even the only woman to opt for a “natural” look at the BET Awards — R&B legend Mary J. Blige rocked a similar style:

Among the many trolls criticising her look — one even offering to hook her up with a plastic surgeon — are now a flood of supporters applauding Stephens’ body positive message. “Anyone who expect boobies to just be all perky and floating doesn’t understand how gravity works,” wrote one.

“You’re gorgeous and you looked absolutely amazing in that dress period! But your confidence and love of self is what has now made me a fan,” wrote another.

The singer has now tweeted a hashtag, #SAGGYBOOBSMATTER, encouraging her followers to “post yourself in that swimsuit or that dress or whatever it is you’ve been feeling you don’t look good enough in — because I know you look f***ing stellar”:
