He embodies the double loss that is so exemplary of our First Nations, yet so poorly understood:
after surviving a state-led attempt to eradicate their culture, many are now denied their
Aboriginality because their connection to culture has been severed.

When Aboriginality is only seen as authentic if it is frozen in time and impermeable to influence,
the work of artists such as Bray falls through the cracks. Yet reality is complex: in her
blog, Van Hout recently noted that she was taught Wiradjuri language by Bray's father. Bray,
meanwhile, concludes his show by learning Wiradjuri dancing from a YouTube video.

The self is manyfold, they suggest, but so is collective identity.
