Mandy Moore has opened up about her “lonely” marriage to Ryan Adams as he faces allegations of misconduct from multiple young women.

Moore was married to Adams from 2009 to 2015 and was among several women who spoke to the New York Times last week.

The women alleged Adams engaged in manipulative and sexually inappropriate behaviour in the guise of furthering their singing careers, claims which he denies.

In an interview with podcast WTF With Marc Maron, Moore opened up further about her marriage to Adams but did not address the allegations made in the Times article.

Describing herself as immediately “smitten” by Adams, Moore said the pair married during a difficult period for her family which saw her mother leave her father for another woman.

Once wed, Moore said she stopped working to focus on her husband who was estranged from his family.

“I was living my life for him,” she said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“Being the mother … it’s an entirely unhealthy dynamic. Oh, I had no sense of self. I was imperceptible, I was so small in my own world.”

Their relationship came to a head as Moore realised they were too codependent and she was ‘so not serving myself”.

“I felt like I was drowning. It was so untenable and unsustainable and I was so lonely, I was so sad. … I knew that this wasn’t the rest of my life. I knew that this wasn’t the person I was supposed to be with, I knew that I wasn’t the person I was meant to be,” Moore said.

In her interview with Times, Moore claimed the decline of her music career when she married Adams was no coincidence.

“His controlling behaviour essentially did block my ability to make new connections in the industry during a very pivotal and potentially lucrative time — my entire mid-to-late 20s,” she said.

Moore claimed Adams, 44, had blocked her from working with other producers or managers, effectively taking over the control of her music career — then sidelining her in “ways Moore came to consider psychologically abusive”.

Other women who spoke to the Times made claims of Ryan grooming them for sex while underage, and of promising career advancement in return for sex.

In response Adams said the Times’ article is “upsettingly inaccurate”, but said he was “not a perfect man and I have made many mistakes”.

“To anyone I have ever hurt, however unintentionally, I apologise deeply and unreservedly,” Adams said in a statement posted to Twitter.

“But the picture that this article paints is upsettingly inaccurate. Some of its details are misrepresented; some are exaggerated; some are outright false. I would never have inappropriate interactions with someone I thought was underage. Period.

“As someone who has always tried to spread joy through my music and my life, hearing that some people believe I caused them pain saddens me greatly. I am resolved to work to be the best man I can be. And I wish everyone compassion, understanding and healing.”
