The curse is real for Western Sydney Wanderers and this time, they only have themselves to blame. Three months, three derbies and three defeats for the Wanderers but on Saturday night, they threw away the chance to tilt the tide in what's becoming periodic disappointment against Sydney FC.
There was no moment of magic from a Sydney star. They weren't cruelled by an unjust decision and the VAR barely made a peep. Instead, their 11th derby defeat in four years was inflicted by one of their own.
It was an event billed as belonging to Western Sydney goalkeeper Vedran Janjetovic but transpired as such for all the wrong reasons. His 150th A-League match was also his 50th game notched up for the Wanderers. By fate, it just so happened to be against his former employers whom he left in acrimonious circumstances two years ago.
It put him on the front cover of the match-day progam, accompanied by a story of famous long-term problem with nerve damage. Just 28 minutes after a delayed kick-off, it wasn't so much that injury that was on display but a complete absence of nerves that lost another A-League derby for the Wanderers.
