BLOCK judging moved into apartment challenges this week with Shaynna Blaze, Neale Whittaker and Darren Palmer ripping into two couples over their eclectic “St Kilda cafe” themed rooms.

While the brief for the challenge was bright, fun and bold, South Australian couple Kerrie and Spence’s wallpaper of a graffiti laneway took it way too far, completely overwhelming the judges — the same went for Norm and Jess’ “horrendous” room.

Perhaps both couples should have taken some tips off Courtney and Hans who managed to blow the judges away with their “whimsical” room.

Here’s how it unfolded for all the contestants.

The Block 2018 — Guest bedroom reveal

The Block 2018 — hallway, laundry and powder room reveal

KERRIE AND SPENCE, SA, APARTMENT 1, SCORE: 20.5

Kerrie and Spence’s risk to be edgy and cool with their St Kilda brief didn’t pay off with the judges.

The couple put a massive, bright laneway mural in their guest bedroom and to say Darren found it disconcerting would be the understatement of this series.

“We were going to start this week with a bang and there it is,” he said, as he stood in front of the very bright graffiti wallpaper.

“I feel like I am falling down a rabbit hole and a psychedelic rabbit hole.” Neale agreed that it was “totally overwhelming”.

Darren said it was giving him vertigo and really messing with his head. “It could not be more abrasive visually.”

But Shaynna intervened to commend the couple on taking a risk, after playing it safe for their other room reveals.

Darren kept ripping into the room. “This is an explosion of the envelope and if the mural doesn’t give you a headache then the bedhead certainly will,” he said. It was a disaster in his opinion.

Host Scott Cam told the couple the shelf sticking out of the wall above the pillows was one of the strangest design decisions any of these judges had encountered in a bedroom.

But they did applaud their wardrobe.

The judges could see what Kerrie and Spence were trying to achieve this week. Sometimes risks pay off … but this wasn’t one of those times.

COURTNEY AND HANS, WA, APARTMENT 2: SCORE 28.5 (Winners)

The first thing Darren said when he walked into Courtney and Hans’ guest bedroom was “more impact, yet more serene”, comparing it to Kerrie and Spence’s room.

Shaynna was immediately drawn to their whimsical, animal wallpaper. “It’s the type of room you want to claim straightaway,” she said.

Darren described the wallpaper as “Beatrix Potter, colourful. Whimsical. Playful” and said it was “far better than next door”.

“If you actually have a look at these animals — one has a cocktail, one has a tequila bottle. It’s fun.” Texturally there was a lot of interest for Darren, particularly the beautifully dressed bed.

Neale said the couple were at their best when doing smaller rooms.

“The Australiana theme you chose in this room is very on-trend right now,” host Scott Cam added. “And it works very well in this room.”

With zero faults, the WA couple scored the highest with a total score of 28.5 and got $20,000 off their reserve.

HAYDEN AND SARA, NSW, APARTMENT 3, SCORE: 27.5

Hayden and Sara were close behind the winners with a score of 27.5 — in fact they pulled off their best reveal yet, according to the judges.

When walking into their classy, yet subtle “St Kilda vibe” bathroom, the judges described it as “nice” and “beautiful”.

“This is where Hayden and Sara have really listened across the series — because this bathroom is amazing!” Shaynna said.

And the judges were loving the choice of bathtub too, saying it looked really expensive, even though it wasn't.

Shaynna and Neale also really loved the wall tile behind the bath — for them it really added interest to the room. Darren however wasn’t so sure about it.

“This is where we are going to have to separate our opinions,” he said. “The wall is the one thing about this room I don’t like. I just think it’s at odds with some of the other more tactile things.”

Moving around the room, Shaynna thought the Zuster vanity was an amazing choice. “Really stunning — and very functional,” she said. “One more power point somewhere around the vanity and it would be spot on for functionality.”

Shaynna said Hayden and Sara’s bathroom was “an incredible improvement in planning, execution and style” compared to their first bathroom in week one.

They got $15,000 off their reserve for coming second.

NORM AND JESS, QLD, APARTMENT 4 (PENTHOUSE), SCORE: 20

Ouch. Norm and Jess joined Kerrie and Spence in copping brutal feedback. But they got half a point less, scoring the lowest of mark of just 20.

And sadly for Norm and Jess, it was supposed to be their dream bedroom design.

“This is dull,” Darren said as soon as he entered the room.

Neale’s big problem was that Courtney and Hans didn’t think enough about the size of the furniture they put into the room. “Everything needed to be bigger,” he said. “Norm and Jess seem to have gone in the opposite direction. What’s with the little rug … and the tiny couch? How did you even find a couch that small?”

Darren agreed, he couldn’t see that the room had any connection to the brief.

“The bed is like a car crash. It’s like they just went to spotlight and got all the different cushions and chucked them on the bed,” Darren said.

Neale was brutal. He said “Norm and Jess have lost the plot” and “really need to pick up their game for week two of this final challenge.”

BIANCA AND CARLA, VIC, APARTMENT 5 (PENTHOUSE), SCORE: 23.5

It would be fair to say the judges’ mood improved considerably once they crossed the threshold into Bianca and Carla’s ensuite. It featured charcoal tiles and white walls.

“Now this feels better,” Neale said.

Shaynna loved the wallpaper. “It’s fun. It’s quirky and it’s pretty,” she said. “Feels like we’re back on brief.”

Shaynna loved the position of the bathtub. In fact, she thought the functionality of the room was great all round. She did, however, have a couple of issues around execution.

“There’s lots of little faults; the drain and tiles aren’t set properly,” Shaynna said.

But they all loved their walk-through concept with double shower heads — it was what they were all hoping to see.

Neale thought they nailed the brief. “This bathroom fits the St Kilda boutique hotel vibe.”

For coming in third place, the girls got $10,000 off their reserve.
