"There's a lot more confidence in our players... and I think maturity in how they've handled themselves this year.

"They've gone on a bit of a ride and they're ready to go."

Simpson had earlier beckoned West Coast supporters to Subiaco Oval for the club's final training session at the iconic WA footy venue, their last chance to farewell players before Saturday's decider and the Subiaco venue before it is demolished for a high school, public open space and housing.

More than 10,000 fans duly heeded the call to the club's former cauldron, drumming up grand final hype via a sea of blue and gold that screamed across the grandstands.

With no West Coast players likely to take home 'Chas' this year (althought suspended Andrew Gaff may go close), Simpson said the Brownlow function in Perth was a chance for rare calm before Saturday's storm.

"For the players they are pretty low key but for the rest of the staff, they can have a couple of reds I suppose," Simpson said.

"It's good for the club... today was great, training was fantastic... unfortunately it was the only day we can really celebrate with our fans."

Simpson was hopeful All-Australian defender Jeremy McGovern, who didn't train in the light two-hour session, would recover from a corked hip in time for Saturday's 12.30pm bouncedown at the traditional home of football.

"I think he just wanted to get out of tonight to be honest," Simpson joked.

"We hope he's okay... he's got a really big corkie, you know, just dealing with that.

"It's really important we get on top of that as early as we can, so you won't see much of him this week... hopefully by the end of the week he'll be ok."

Star midfielder Luke Shuey, who has an ankle niggle, surprised the coach by getting through the session on Monday.

"He ran around today, so I was surprised he did that ... so he's obviously feeling ok," Simpson said.

"I think it's a 'garden variety' ankle that he's played with before."

Simpson all but confirmed emerging defender Tom Barrass would again mark 211cm Magpie sensation Mason Cox, who proved a matchwinner against reigning premiers Richmond on Friday night with three goals and eight contested marks, equalling the AFL finals record.

Barrass had the better of the Texan product in West Coast's comeback qualifying final win over the Pies in Perth during week one of the finals series but Simpson hinted at a different approach to Cox this time.

"Tom Barrass did the job last time... it was only two games ago albeit we're seeing some little different things that he's doing, so we've got a plan for that but ... we'll back our backs in," he said.

West Coast's next training session is a closed one in Perth on Wednesday before the grand final squad and officials fly to Melbourne early Thursday afternoon.

Win or lose this Saturday, the club will hold a public function to thank their fans on Sunday at 12pm at Langley Park in the CBD.

David loves a good drop and a cracking yarn.
