New York: The future of US Deputy Attorney-General Rod Rosenstein, the Trump administration official overseeing the independent investigation into Russian election meddling, has been thrown into doubt by reports he is expected to leave his job.

The shock news follows reports over the weekend that Rosenstein offered to wear a wire to secretly record President Donald Trump and discussed invoking the 25th Amendment, which allows a majority of cabinet members to remove a president from office.

Deputy Attorney-General Rod Rosenstein has reportedly offered his resignation.

Rosenstein strongly denied the allegations.

Following a flurry of reports on Rosenstein's departure, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said he would remain in the job until at least Thursday.

Trump is in New York, where he will this week chair a meeting of the United Nations Security Council.
