Australia overcame a tumultuous season to clinch their second world series sevens title in three years in Paris on the weekend.
The Australian women staged an unbeaten campaign in a tough pool to make the final against New Zealand on Monday morning (AEST).
They beat Fiji, Russia and Canada to top their pool, beat Fiji a second time in the quarter-finals, then won a nailbiter against France 21-17 to make the final. Emma Tonegato and Emilee Cherry starred to produce a turnover and match-winning try in the last play of the game. With a four-point series lead over arch rivals the Black Ferns, it was enough to seal an overall world series win.
Injured co-captain Sharni Williams said she was proud of her team mates after a "rollercoaster" season that included changing coach, Commonwealth Games silver and a mixed bag on the world series trail. Australia won in Dubai and Sydney, finished third in Japan and second in Canada last month. They played the last two tournaments without three of their biggest stars, with Williams, Alicia Quirk and Ellia Green all injured.
"It's been a bit of a rollercoaster and a really big year for our coaching staff as well, just trying to figure out when we needed to be peaking, with so many big moments in the season," Williams said.
