VERDICT
Both smart plugs are very useful but Elgato's is obviously the smart choice in Apple-centric homes. Telstra's gear is less restrictive, working with more smartphones and smart speakers, but keep in mind that you're tying yourself to Telstra.

ELGATO EVE ENERGY
$84.95
Elgato's Eve smart gear only works with Apple devices. You can control this plug using Apple's Home app on iOS devices, via an Apple Watch or by talking to Siri on a handheld gadget or Apple's HomePod smart speaker. To control devices when you're out of the house, you need an iPad, Apple TV or HomePod at home to act as the central hub.

TELSTRA SMART POWER PLUG
$48 standalone (also included in Telstra's Automation and Energy Starter Kit)
Telstra's range of smart gear works with Apple or Android devices and can link to Google and Amazon's talkative smart assistants (but not Apple's Siri). The smart plug isn't a standalone device, it relies on the Telstra Smart Home Hub which comes as part of Telstra's Automation and Energy Starter Kit that sells for $25 a month. You don't need to be a Telstra Bigpond home broadband customer, but you do need a Telstra ID linked to a mobile phone or broadband account to use the gear, so you're locking yourself in as a Telstra customer.

CHECK THIS OUT
Apple's Home app supports "geofencing", which tracks the location of your iPhone to automatically trigger events and change settings when you enter or leave the house. For example, you can automatically disable motion sensors when you arrive home so you don't receive unnecessary alerts. The Telstra Smart Home app doesn't support geofencing, so you need to remember to switch between Home and Away modes as you come and go during the day.
