The NSW Government agreed to pay Rugby Australia up to $60 million over a 12-year period to secure its support for the government's controversial stadiums plan.
The 2016 deal included a $2 million sweetener to replace the Sydney Bledisloe Cup Test with another Rugby Championship match while ANZ Stadium was refurbished, up to $10 million for a Test and any tour matches during the yet-to-be-confirmed British and Irish Lions tour in 2025 and "immediate approval of" and funding for the Australian Rugby Development Centre at Moore Park.
On the day of Australia’s blockbuster opening Test against Ireland, documents reveal that RA will pocket $2 million for the third Test in Sydney on June 23 and August's Bledisloe Cup opener, as well as an “incremental” $1 million a year for the Sydney Sevens.
The figures are contained in a memorandum of understanding signed between then-Australian Rugby Union boss Bill Pulver and the state government and tabled in NSW Parliament this week.
The agreement was brokered by Pulver and then-premier Mike Baird on April 13 2016, the day before Baird announced an about-face on the government's $2 billion stadiums plan, revealing the extent to which his government was prepared to go in order to secure the major codes' support.
"On behalf of the ARU we congratulate the NSW Government on its commitment to improving stadia infrastructure in NSW. We look forward to working with you in the delivery of outstanding stadia and premium international rugby content for NSW," Pulver wrote in the covering letter dated April 14.
