The ACT Brumbies' door is always open to 33-Test flyhalf Matt Toomua.

Toomua's reportedly in talks with Wallabies coach Michael Cheika to lure the former Brumbies playmaker back for next year's Rugby World Cup in Japan.

While the 28-year-old's contracted to English club Leicester Tigers until mid-2020, if his next contract saw a return to Super Rugby then he would be eligible for Wallabies selection.

Brumbies chief executive Michael Thomson said they hadn't made a formal approach to Toomua.

"Matty's a high-quality player, he's had history at the Brumbies and we'd always be interested in speaking to a player like that if he had an interest in coming back," Thomson said on Friday.

"But at the moment there's been no formal approach or anything like that so we'll just see how it all plays out. We'd be crazy if we didn't take a look at a player like that if he became available."

Meanwhile, the Brumbies confirmed on Friday Fairfax Media's report that Toomua's former playmaking partner Christian Lealiifano will play for Toyota Shokki in the 2018 Japanese Top League Season.
