“I once worked for a PR firm in South Melbourne and the owners dog would pee on the carpet and the staff had to clean it up,” she says.

If there’s one place where nobody would mind cleaning up after someone else’s dog, it’s likely to be the Mad Paws office in Sydney’s Pyrmont. The company runs Australia’s largest online pet sitting community, and walks the talk by not only allowing staff to bring their dogs in to work, but also by offering a pet daycare on site.

According to CEO and co founder Alexis Soulopoulos, sometimes the office contains as many dogs as people.

“We are running a start up, so it can be very stressful. All the surveys show having dogs around reduces stress, and we find that to be the case,” he says.

The company’s mission is to make pet care easier, and while encouraging dogs to hang out in other people’s offices undoubtedly cuts into their day care business, Soulopoulos is all for it.

“We’ve had periods where we don’t have dogs in the office and the stress levels are very different,” he says.

When it comes to doggy day care, the Mad Paws office doesn’t discriminate: all pets are welcome, but they have to do a trial day first to check it’s the right fit.

“Not all pets get along. We once had a shy cat and she didn’t get along with the other animals in the office,” he says, noting Mad Paws often has rabbits or birds on site too.

Some dogs come so regularly they are missed long after the arrangement ends.

“There was a beautiful dog called Charlie who came to use for three days a week since she was a puppy. Then, she moved to the United States,” he says, noting the team members were so sad they threw her a goodbye party.

Like Soulopoulos, the creators of Take Your Dog To Work Day have a few tips for newcomers before jumping in on June 22.

First, make sure nobody is allergic, afraid or opposed to having dogs in the office for a day. Next, be honest about if you think your dog will cope. If it is extra shy or on the aggressive side, it’s probably not a great idea. Then, pet proof the space, both for your dog and your colleagues, and lastly, know when to call it: have a pet sitter on standby around lunchtime in case things aren’t working out.

Take Your Dog To Work Day is on Friday, June 22.
